Fall is Around the Corner: A Few Financial Items to Keep in Mind

As summer winds down and we head into the final few months of the year, now can be a good time to make sure a few financial items haven’t fallen off your radar.

A quick fall check-in:

  • Retirement contributions: Are you on pace to contribute what you intended to your 401(k), IRA or other retirement accounts this year?
  • Required Minimum Distributions: If you’re subject to an RMD, fall is a good time to confirm that your required distributions are accounted for before the year-end deadline.
  • Tax planning: There is still time to review capital gains and losses, possible tax loss harvesting opportunities, charitable giving, Roth conversion opportunities and other strategies with your financial and tax professionals.
  • Open enrollment: Fall often means benefit elections. It’s a good opportunity to revisit your health coverage, HSA contributions, life insurance and other workplace benefits.

A little planning now can help avoid the year-end rush and gives you time to make adjustments while there are still several months left in 2026.

Micron Announces a New Benefit for CNY Families:

Micron recently announced a $250 million commitment to Trump Accounts, the new tax-advantaged investment accounts established for children. The initiative is expected to support up to one million children across the country.

Of particular interest locally, Micron plans to make a one-time $250 seed contribution for eligible children with Trump Accounts who live in communities where Micron operates, including: Onondaga, Madison, Oneida, Oswego, Cayuga, Cortland, Jefferson and Lewis counties in New York. Micron is also introducing an employee benefit that will match contributions to Trump Accounts by up to $1,000 per child under age 18.

Trump Accounts are designed to give children an early start on long-term investing, with assets invested in eligible low-cost U.S. index funds.

While the accounts are still new, Micron’s announcement is a noteworthy example of how employers and corporations may begin participating alongside families. For Central New York families, this is certainly a development worth watching as additional details about eligibility and Micron’s local contribution program become available.
